Once Upon an Extraordinary Time...
24th Streets 2003/2004 Season will look at the past
through contemporary eyes. Classic Fairy Tales told with all
of the sophistication of these extraordinary times we live
in. Fairy Tales for 2 different audiences: Kate Crackernuts
for adult audiences & Schneewittchen for audiences of
all ages. Centuries-old Fairy Tales still relevant for all
ages in their political, social, and moral observations. In
extraordinary times like these, we often turn to classic tales
for comfort, for guidance, to help us find our moral center
again.
And to bring you these tales, we offer some of LAs best
artists. Weve got Jessica Kubzansky directing Sheila
Callaghans insanely brilliant Kate Crackernuts. Inspired
by the English Fairy Tale of the same name, Callahan creates
a fantastical and sexy world (for adult audiences) where voices
live outside their bodies and fairy tale remnants merge with
modern reality.
Then, in the spring, Debbie Devine gives voice to Schneewittchen,
a new version of Snow White for family audiences, being co-written
with Richard Alger & Tina Kronis with music by Brenda
Varda. Both of our season productions examine prevalent themes
of our post 9/11 world with great theatricality.
And extra season programs include our fabulous INTERSECTIONS
Music Series (October 03) and our popular SATURDAY EXPLORER
SERIES for family audiences in early 04
2.
On Stage in October... the West Coast Premiere of

It's a great ride that starts before the doors open
and ends only when we're assured that everyone lives, well,
ever after.
Backstage West
We are very excited about our season-opener, KATE CRACKERNUTS,
by Sheila Callaghan. Its a brilliantly insane script
by Callaghan, one of Americas rising star playwrights.
Its a heartbreaking, hot, sexy, hilarious, poignant,
gritty, dark fairy tale! Dont be fooled by the words:
Fairy Tale. Yes, we do lots of edgy work for young audiences,
but KATE IS NOT A SHOW FOR CHILDREN! It delves into the wild
world of Raves and is quite sexually explicit. So lock the
kids away for this one, get a babysitter and come ready for
a theatrical adventure!
We are thrilled to be working with our longtime pal, Jessica
Kubzansky, who is directing this huge show for us. Youll
understand why we say it a huge show when you see it; a world
unto itself. If you dont know Jessicas razor sharp
directing work, then youre in for a treat!
We are also blessed with a crack design team and an absolute
dream cast!

Arohi
means ascending melody in Sanskrit, and the ascending
melodies of Paul Livingstone with the Arohi Ensemble and special
guest Prince Diabate will rise to the rafters of 24th Street
Theatre on October 26 as part of the theaters Intersections
series, fusing music from across the globe.
The Arohi Ensemble will perform some of their signature ragajazz
improvisations, and join forces with leading African traditional
and creative artist Prince Diabate for dynamic Indo-African
jazz meltdowns. For Arohi, sitarist Paul Z. Livingstone plays
fretless guitars and world strings; Pedro Eustache plays bansuri,
flutes and woodwinds; Anand Bennett plays mandacello and contrabass;
and Leonice Shineman plays African drum set, Indian and world
percussion.
Paul Z. Livingstone was born in Beirut and is an international
performing artist on the sitar and a fretless guitar of his
own design. His studies have focused on North Indian classical
music, and he studied under Amiya Dasgupta and Dr. Rajeev
Taranth at the California Institute of the Arts, where he
continues advanced studies with Dr. Tarnath and living legend
Pandit Ravi Shankar.
Prince Diabate, considered to be one of the leading kora players
of his generation, joins Arohi for this performance. Moving
easily between the classical traditions of Mande music and
modern fusion, he has incorporated reggae, rap, blues and
funk into his work, with entirely original results.
24th Street's Intersections series is made possible by a grant
from the California Arts Council.
