24th STreet’s TEATRO NUEVO, Latino Theatre Initiative

In 2003 we realized that while our neighbors brought their kids to our after school program, the parents rarely attended our professional productions.  So we began an outreach program, our Teatro Nuevo program, designed to create culturally relevant Spanish language shows and events for our neighborhood families.  The events included music, visual art exhibits by Latino artists, Spanish language film screenings, and live theatrical productions.  We invited our after school families to these events and offered free tickets to all neighborhood residents.  We brought in Jesus Castaños, a theatre artist from Mexico, to head our Teatro Nuevo program.  Our Spanish language shows gained more interest and we began international collaborations with the US Embassy in El Salvador as well as with the Mexican government and with theatres in Mexico , Colombia, El Salvador, Ecuador, and elsewhere.

Our Teatro Nuevo shows have become known as some of the best Spanish language theatre in Los Angeles, having repeatedly earned Critics’ Choice status by the LA TIMES, Backstage, and The LA Weekly. La Razón Blindada became the first Spanish-language show ever to win LA Weekly’s top honor, the 2011 PRODUCTION OF THE YEAR AWARD.
