Sofia Alvarez was born in El Paso, Texas on May 24, 1935. While growing up in El Paso, she was a choir member and participated in several community plays. She came to California in 1959. Forty years and six children later, “Tropical America” marks her return to the theater.
Richard Azurdia’s 30-plus theatre credits include: “Living Out” at the Mark Taper Forum (director Bill Rauch), East LA Classic Theatre’s “Much Ado About Nothing” at the Ford Amphitheatre and “Cyrano de Bergerac” (director Tony Plana), Collage Dance Theatre’s Horton Award Winner “After Eden” and most recently “Sleeping with the Ambassador” (director Heidi Duckler), and Grupo De Teatro Sinergia’s acclaimed “Frida Kahlo” which also opened the First Annual LA Latino International Theatre Festival at the Japan American Theatre. His film and television credits include “Killers 2: the Beast,” “Demon’s Kiss,” “The Disappeared,” “Hunting of Man,” the cult hit “Space Banda,” “Kingpin” and “On Common Ground.” He’s also worked on multiple voice-overs and commercials. Richard thanks Carmelo, Jay, A.Z., his family, friends and the star that watches over him.
Lydia Blanco was nominated for a B. Iden Payne Award for Best Lead Actress in the play “My Visits with MGM” in Austin, Texas. In Los Angeles, she has participated in South Coast Repertory’s Hispanic Playwright’s Festial, “The War Game” at The Victory Theatre and “Lockup for The Syndicate.” She has starred in the independent features “The Right Girl,” “Beyond Words” and “The MO of MI.” Her recent TV credits include NBC’s “Good Morning Miami” and Lifetime’s “Strong Medicine.”
Marina Dena-Santo is proud to be a part of the up-and-coming Teatro Nuevo. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts from Whittier College, and has had the pleasure of working on other productions in Los Angeles at the Frida Kahlo Theatre and the Coleman & Smith Artistic Company Theater. Marina would like to give praise to her very loving and supportive family and friends—Palabra a Su Madre!
Cher Ferreyra was born and raised in New York. She began her career as one of the “Women of Wrestling” by creating the character Loca. For three years, Cher has been an active member of The Actor’s Lab, and has studied improv and comedy. She recently finished a USC graduate film titled “Rancho Cucamonga.” She can next be seen in a music video for Univision for an upcoming Latin hip hop group, Akwid (www.akwid.com). Cher had no idea that from wrestling, she would land in glitz and glamour!
  Efrain Garibay was introduced to the world of performing arts at a very young age. He began his artistic carreer dancing at his elementary school in his native birth state of Michoacan, Mexico. While still dancing, he has recently performed in a number of theatre productions, namely, “ENLACE: Sembrando Mi Cultura” and “He Has Risen.” Efrain enjoys using art and culture as a means to creating a sense of community in the Los Angeles region’s inner-city areas.
Guatemalan-born and raised in Washington, D.C., Lorena Mena began acting in local theatre productions in her hometown. Since her arrival to Los Angeles, Lorena has been very busy, working in both English and Spanish, appearing in the movies “God’s Army,” “Puddle Jumper,” “Price of the American Dream,” “New Suits” which was featured on Showtime, and most recently “Judge Koan.” Lorena has guest starred on the PBS show “American Family” and has appeared on several television shows including “Yes, Dear,” “General Hospital” and “The District” for CBS as well as in over a dozen television commercials. Lorena is very proud to be part of this production and would like to thank Carmelo and Jay for the opportunity.
Alejandro Patino is happy to be a part of Teatro Nuevo and hopes you enjoy tonight’s performance. His recent theatrical credits include Jaime Escalante in “Stand and Deliver,” Stewpot in “South Pacific,” Captain Goolack in “Fair Maid of the West” at Knight’s Bridge Theater and Billy Dunn in “The Heartbreak House” at Vanguard Theatre. His film and television credits include “Bowfinger,” “The Trip,” “La Cucaracha,” “Two Coyotes,” “Kingpin,” “Robbery Homicide,” “Ressurrections Blvd,” “E.R.” and others. Alejandro’s commercial credits are available upon request. If you get a chance, please try to rent any of the above-mentioned films—he could use the residual money.
Ursula Schmidt’s creative background encompasses acting, writing, producing, educating and public relations. She is the co-founder of Quantum Theatre Company where she co-produced the entire 2001-2003 season, most recently completing the bi-lingual “Romeo and (y) Juliet(a).” She has performed extensively on stage and co-wrote, produced and performed in the original plays “Salon Stories” and “Daily Tasks.” Last year, under contract as a writer with Family Theatre Productions, she wrote two Spanish Radio Dramas “Perspectivas” and “Voluntad” to be aired later this year. She dedicates this performance to the strong women in her life.
