Colombian-born JUAN DEVIS (Playwright) writes, directs and produces collaborative multimedia projects focusing on social and political accountability. His public media interventions are produced, from inception to realization, with local communities. In all of his projects, Devis provides a means of communication and expression between diverse groups where none had previously existed; he acts as an educator, editor and translator, reflecting a conception of art that has concrete social goals. Devis was recently nominated for a 2003 Rockefeller Fellowship for his film-in-progress “The Digital Migrant” documenting the perseverance of four immigrant families working in the Los Angeles service sector. Other recent projects include the online video game “Tropical America” (www.tropicalamerica.com) that traces the genesis of the 1981 massacre of El Mozote in El Salvador and Face-In (www.face-in.org) featuring 10 in-depth portraits from California’s prisons. In addition, the bilingual Devis has written and directed for film, theater and television, both in the United States and Latin America. His films include the feature “The Petty Curse of Having This Body” (Arnon Milchan Award) and the 1996 documentary “Ice” (Best Colombian Documentary, Ministry of Culture). Devis is the President of the Board of Freewaves, an organization promoting the exhibition and production of independent video and new media. CARMELO ALVAREZ (Director) began studying experimental theater at Barnsdale Jr. Arts Center at the age of 15. By the age of 18, he was touring with Grassroots American Dance Theater. He then made his directorial debut at Inner City Cultural Center. Over the last 20 years, he has established numerous cultural centers throughout Los Angeles. Some career highlights include creating the first electronic Town Hall Meeting and directing “Resistance,” a play about the history of civil unrest in Los Angeles.
RACQUEL LEHRMAN (Line Producer) is the founder and managing director of Theatre Planners. She received her BFA from NYU-Tisch School of the Arts over eight years ago. After graduating, Racquel lived in New York putting on/starring in numerous productions. Since moving to Los Angeles, and starting Theatre Planners, it has been one of the toughest ventures that she has ever committed to, but also one of the most rewarding. Since starting her business, she has gotten clients from all over LA doing everything from publicity to consulting and much more. It has been an abolute pleasure to work with Jay.
CHRISTOPHER R. BOLTZ (Set Designer) has designed sets or lighting for “The West Indian” (Culver City Theatre in the Park), “A Festival of Dance” (Sun Theatre) and “The Golden Boot Awards” (Centruy City Plaza Hotel). For USC, he designed “The Rocky Horror Show,” “The Illusion” and “How to Succeed...” among others. He served as the audio/lighting coordinator for the workshop of “The Search... .” starring Lily Tomlin. www.setsandlights.com
KATHI O'DONOHUE (Lighting Designer/Bowler) returns to 24th Street Theatre where she last lit “Laura Comstock’s Bag Punching Dog.” Current shows include “Trailer Trash Housewife” at The Zephyr, “Men from the Boys” at The Fountain and “An Evening in...Bed” at The Electric Lodge. She’s lit hundreds of other shows and has received many awards.
ROSA LOPEZ (Costume Designer) graduated with a B.F.A. in Fashion Design from Woodbury University, which has guided her in the direction of achieving her dream of costume designing. She currently works as a costume designer and costumer for theater. Her most recent work includes, “Sleeping with the Ambassador” produced by Heidi Duckler and “Cesar and Ruben” produced and directed by Ed Begley, Jr. Rosa’s future goals are to work as a costume designer and costumer for film and television.
SILVINA SZPERLING (Choreographer) was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and has been dancing forever and choreographing since the ‘80s, both for the stage and site-specific pieces. Since 1994, she has dove into video/dance and has exhibited her pieces at uncountable festivals around the world. Silvina has also created a number of multimedia pieces for SZ Danza Company, which she toured with through Argentina, Uruguay, USA, Spain, Switzerland and Monaco. She is the Founder Director of the Festival Internacional de Video-danza de Buenos Aires and currently writes for La Opinion newspaper in Los Angeles. Her in-progress video/dance SZiS has recently been awarded a grant from Dance Film Association, NYC. Silvina lives in Glendale with her two kids and husband.
