JUAN DEVIS (Playwright) writes, directs and produces
collaborative multimedia projects focusing on social and political
accountability. His public media interventions are produced,
from inception to realization, with local communities. In all
of his projects, Devis provides a means of communication and
expression between diverse groups where none had previously
existed; he acts as an educator, editor and translator, reflecting
a conception of art that has concrete social goals. Devis was
recently nominated for a 2003 Rockefeller Fellowship for his
film-in-progress The Digital Migrant documenting
the perseverance of four immigrant families working in the Los
Angeles service sector. Other recent projects include the online
video game Tropical America (www.tropicalamerica.com)
that traces the genesis of the 1981 massacre of El Mozote in
El Salvador and Face-In (www.face-in.org) featuring 10 in-depth
portraits from Californias prisons. In addition, the bilingual
Devis has written and directed for film, theater and television,
both in the United States and Latin America. His films include
the feature The Petty Curse of Having This Body
(Arnon Milchan Award) and the 1996 documentary Ice
(Best Colombian Documentary, Ministry of Culture). Devis is
the President of the Board of Freewaves, an organization promoting
the exhibition and production of independent video and new media.
He is also recipient of the 2002-03 ABC/Disney Fellowship for
his feature film Welcome to Tijuana." jdevis@face-in.org |
