Called to the Sky - Director's Notes on "Ladybird"

Ladybird came out of story circles we had with the community starting back in April 2013. We invited the parents and family members of the students who attend classes here at 24th STreet Theatre to share stories about “what was the best gift you ever received.” What came back were stories of family, homeland, sacrifice and love. Our simple circles of sharing had deep roots that ran back to our ancestors and a tsunami of stories were shared of sacrifices made so future generations might have opportunity. It became clear that we carry these stories in us, with us, and that legacy shapes how we live our lives. Like migrating birds, we carry those stories with us, wherever we go. This is a community that understands the importance of their children having access to the arts but never considered that they too might have a place on stage. Tonight, you are invited to witness our community onstage (many for the very first time) giving voice to a play that holds their experiences and stretches beyond the actors on stage, but includes others who shared their heart and stories with us. An abundance of love and gratitude to these passionate and generous artists. Now it’s time to fly.
Ladybird salió de los círculos de historias que tuvimos con la comunidad a partir de abril de 2013. Invitamos a los padres y familiares de los alumnos que asisten a clases aquí en el Teatro 24 (24Th Street Theatre), a compartir sus historias acerca de "cual era el mejor regalo que jamás habían recibido." Lo que recibimos fueron historias de familia, de la patria, de sacrificio y de amor. Nuestros simples círculos de intercambio tenían raíces profundas que iban de vuelta a nuestros antepasados y un tsunami de historias fueron compartidas de los sacrificios realizados para que las generaciones futuras pudieran tener oportunidades. Se hizo evidente que llevamos estas historias con nosotros, dentro de nosotros y las formas heredadas de cómo vivimos nuestras vidas. Al igual que las aves migratorias, llevamos esas historias con nosotros dondequiera que vamos. Esta es una comunidad que entiende la importancia de que sus hijos tengan acceso a las artes, pero nunca consideraron que ellos también podrían tener un lugar en el escenario. Esta noche, usted está invitado a presenciar a nuestra comunidad en el escenario (muchos de ellos por primera vez), dando voz a una obra de teatro que contiene sus experiencias y que se extiende más allá de los actores en el escenario, ya que incluye otros que compartieron su corazón y sus historias con nosotros.
