Día de los Muertos 2025

If you missed our 20th Annual Dia de los Muertos celebration, you missed quite a party. Even while many DDLM celebrations around the city were cancelled due to the ongoing ICE raids, our two city council offices, Hernandez @ CD1 and Harris-Dawson @ CD8, encouraged us to stand alongside our community as this year’s festivities were so very needed for the spirits of so many. We were concerned that if we did go ahead with our event that few would show up.

But we had thousands of neighbors in the streets as we always do on Day of the Dead. Altars were made, and many bands played, deceased loved ones were honored, authentic Mexican food was enjoyed, the always electric Jack Black dazzled the crowd, people danced in the streets and took selfies in front of the Constitution. The Ferris wheel was ridden, hundreds of faces were painted, and abrazos… many many hugs between old friends and new ones. Council members Hernandez and Harris-Dawson were absolutely right; Los Angeles clearly needed to celebrate. And we needed to celebrate Los Angeles heritage, which is largely Mexican, even if that heritage is currently under attack.

Thanks to the city council offices and their hard-working staff members who helped us this and every year. Thanks to our friends at USC and at One Legacy for supporting our event. And thanks to our Congresswoman, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, for showing up even during this government shutdown.

This year, more than ever, tradition matters.

Si se perdieron nuestra Vigésima Celebración anual de El Día de Los Muertos, se perdieron una gran fiesta.

Aunque muchas celebraciones de El Día de Los Muertos en la ciudad se cancelaron debido a las redadas de ICE, nuestras dos oficinas del consejo municipal, Hernández (CD1) y Harris-Dawson (CD8), nos animaron a apoyar a nuestra comunidad, ya que las festividades de este año eran muy necesarias para el bienestar de muchos. Nos preocupaba que, si seguíamos adelante con nuestro evento, pocos asistirían.

Pero tuvimos miles de vecinos en las calles, como siempre sucede en El Día de Los Muertos. Se hicieron altares, tocaron muchas bandas, se honró a los seres queridos fallecidos, se disfrutó de auténtica comida mexicana, el siempre vibrante Jack Black deslumbró al público, la gente bailó en las calles y se tomó selfies frente a la Constitución. Hubo paseos en la rueda de la fortuna, cientos de personas se pintaron la cara y se dieron abrazos… muchísimos abrazos entre viejos y nuevos amigos.

Los concejales Hernández y Harris-Dawson tenían toda la razón; Los Ángeles claramente necesitaba celebrar. Y necesitábamos celebrar la herencia angelina, que es mayoritariamente mexicana, aunque esa herencia esté siendo atacada actualmente.

Gracias a las oficinas del consejo municipal y a su dedicado personal que nos ayudó este año y todos los años. Gracias a nuestros amigos de la USC y One Legacy por apoyar nuestro evento. Y gracias a nuestra congresista, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, por estar presente incluso durante este cierre del gobierno.

Este año, más que nunca, la tradición importa.
