Irene Mancia: 24th ST Theatre is a place where I can be who I want to be. What I mostly appreciate about 24th ST Theatre are the people that I work within the leadership program

Mauricio Morreno: My favorite part and aspect of the Teen Leadership Program here at 24th STreet Theatre is the warm-up because every warm-up every single week is always different, and there's always a new way to incorporate our bodies, our voices and ways that you couldn’t really picture before.

Tina Langill, Development Director: I think the Teen Leadership Program here is fantastic. Not only are we teaching these young people all of the theater and performance skills that they would be learning in a regular theater class, but we're really going beyond that and we're asking them to act as mentors for younger students.

Somkene Okwuego: We act on Wednesdays, every Wednesday that we have a class which leads up to our show that's in May and part of it's not just acting but they want to expose us to our community. So we take a lot of community engaging events, a lot of field trips kind of just to know the world around us and it's really nice we get to see new things. We’re like little tourists in our own cities, so it's really fun.

Irene Han: My favorite part about 24th ST is being able to mentor younger children because it helps me be able to be a leader and it helps the children to be able to become a better person and come out of their shell.

Maria Eliades: I think it's great because you kind of get to see yourself in them, so “Hey, this kind of was like me when I was little” and I think it's really exciting that we get to shape the children's lives, kind of help them grow and teach them. It's also really exciting for me to see how much they grow because I was a part of that. That's the biggest most amazing thing from this, that I get from this theater.

Somkene Okwuego: When I started at 24th ST,  I wasn't necessarily shy but I was a very discreet person, um I say so much I don't really trust that much, but going to 24 STreet built me a family that I can really trust.

Jerry Cruz: The people are friendly, they are very welcoming. I feel comfortable, I guess. like I feel welcome and what they had to offer, makes you feel like it gives me a chance to do things that I have never done before. Like act. I have never thought of myself as an actor.

The team leadership program has changed me because whereas I'm usually isolated and I like to work independently this program allows me to work as an ensemble and work with others in order to incorporate different ideas and because of that, I am now open to more opinions about certain things and I am more patient with others.

Irene Han: I would say in a way it is therapy for me because it helps me be able to let out all of my emotions - positive or negative - into acting and let me able to express mysel.

There are always those moments where you'd want to let your feelings out or you kind of don't know how to say something and I think theatre actually helps in that way.

Tina Langill: Number one: it builds their self-confidence and makes them feel good about themselves. There's something about having somebody applaud your performance that's just a great esteem builder. A lot of teens I know struggle with self-esteem so that's a huge influence in you know they're going to look at themselves as teenagers. It really helps to reinforce that. But also, theatre can help you with presentation skills there can be crucial no matter what you do in life later on. Being able to present and share your ideas in an interesting and engaging way without being nervous can help you get your ideas across so it’s a real-life skill that I think they can use not only when they go to college, but then as they continue in their lives and careers. I

Jocelyn Mendez:  think it helped me understand that everyone has a voice and that we all learn differently but that it's important to share that voice with others

From teachers to neighborhood residents, to artists, to new audience members. We work every day to engage all kinds of people in the arts.

Debbie Devine: One of the dancers lifted up the head of the other other dancer and there was--

Student: the other guy!

Debbie Devine: And the other guy did the mirror exercise with him. It was so brilliant.

Irene Mancia: El Teatro 24 es un lugar donde puedo ser quien quiero ser. Lo que más aprecio del Teatro 24 son las personas con las que trabajo dentro del programa de liderazgo

Mauricio Morreno: Mi parte y aspecto favorito del Programa de Liderazgo de Jóvenes aquí en el Teatro 24 es el calentamiento porque cada calentamiento cada semana es siempre diferente, y siempre hay una nueva forma de incorporar nuestros cuerpos y nuestras voces y nuevas formas que realmente no podías imaginar antes

Tina Langill, Directora de Desarrollo Comunitario: Creo que el Programa de Liderazgo para Adolescentes aquí es fantástico. No solo les enseñamos a estos jóvenes todas las habilidades teatrales y de actuación que estarían aprendiendo en una clase de teatro regular, sino que realmente vamos más allá y les pedimos que actúen como mentores para los estudiantes más jóvenes.

Somkene Okwuego: Actuamos los miércoles, todos los miércoles tenemos una clase en la que vamos construyendo nuestro espectáculo que es en mayo y parte no solo se trata de actuar sino que también quieren exponernos a nuestra comunidad. Así que tomamos parte en muchos eventos que involucran a la comunidad, muchos viajes de campo simplemente para conocer el mundo que nos rodea y es realmente agradable que podamos ver cosas nuevas. Somos como pequeños turistas en nuestras propias ciudades, así que es muy divertido.

Irene Han: Mi parte favorita en el Teatro 24 es ser mentora de niños más pequeños porque me ayuda a ser un líder y ayuda a los niños a ser una mejor persona y salir de su caparazón. Maria Eliades: Creo que es genial porque te ves en ellos, "Oye, este niño o niña es como yo cuando era pequeño" y creo que es realmente emocionante que podamos darle forma a la vida de los niños, de ayudarlos a crecer y enseñarles. También es realmente emocionante para mí ver cuánto crecen porque yo era parte de eso. Eso es lo más increíble de todo lo que recibí de este teatro.

Somkene Okwuego: Cuando comencé en el Teatro 24, no era necesariamente tímida, pero era una persona muy discreta, ehh, digo mucho, realmente no confiaba tanto, pero el venir al Teatro 24 me construyó una familia en la que puedo realmente confiar.

Jerry Cruz: La gente es amigable, son muy acogedores. Me siento cómodo, supongo; como si me sintiera bienvenido y lo que te ofrecen, te hace sentir que te dan la oportunidad de hacer cosas que nunca antes había hecho, omo actuar. Nunca me he considerado un actor.

El programa de liderazgo del equipo me ha cambiado porque, aunque por lo general estoy aislado y me gusta trabajar de forma independiente, este programa me permite trabajar en conjunto y trabajar con otros para incorporar diferentes ideas y por eso, ahora estoy abierto a más opiniones sobre ciertas cosas y soy más paciente con los demás.

Irene Han: Diría que de alguna manera es una terapia para mí porque la actuación me ayuda a poder expresar todas mis emociones, positivas o negativas, y me permite expresar mi propio misterio.

Siempre hay momentos en los que querrías expresar tus sentimientos o no sabes cómo decir algo y creo que el teatro realmente ayuda de esa manera.

Tina Langill: Número uno: crea confianza en sí mismos y los hace sentir bien consigo mismos. Hay algo acerca de que alguien aplauda tu actuación que hace que esto sea un gran generador de estima. Muchos adolescentes que conozco luchan con la autoestima, así que es una gran influencia saber que se verán a sí mismos como adolescentes. Realmente ayuda a reforzar eso. Pero también, el teatro puede ayudarte con las habilidades de presentación que pueden ser cruciales sin importar lo que hagas en la vida más adelante. Ser capaz de presentar y compartir tus ideas de una manera interesante y atractiva sin ponerte nervioso puede ayudarte a difundir tus ideas, por lo que es una habilidad de la vida real que creo que pueden usar no solo cuando van a la universidad, sino a medida que continúan en sus vidas y carreras.

Jocelyn Mendez: creo que me ayudó a entender que todos tenemos voz y que todos aprendemos de manera diferente, pero que es importante compartir esa voz con los demás

Desde profesores hasta residentes del vecindario, artistas y nuevos miembros de la audiencia, trabajamos todos los días para involucrar a todo tipo de personas en las artes.
Debbie Devine: Uno de los bailarines levantó la cabeza del otro bailarín y ahí estaba--

Debbie Devine: Y el otro tipo hizo el ejercicio de espejo con él. Fue tan brillante.
