Art Heals

The day after 9/11, when everything was still closed, 24th STreet decided that we had a responsibility to open our doors and offer comfort as best we could. That night we had a standing-room-only crowd of terrified citizens who, while watching the show, collectively realized that life as we knew it would indeed go on... that everything would not in fact change as a result of the events of 9/11. For those 100 people, it was a huge embrace that meant a lot. Earlier that day we’d wondered if we were doing the right thing because even the airports were still closed, but then seeing the comfort that people took from the human contact that evening, it was clear that we’d done what was needed by opening our theatre for FREE to the public in the wake of the most traumatic event ever.
It is precisely in times like these when art matters most. Art truly does bring people together. And this week, we certainly need to be brought together. So we at 24th STreet Theatre have decided to open up our houses this weekend once again for FREE to everyone. Our new show, Hansel & Gretel Bluegrass, by Bryan Davidson, is about resilience and the value of family, thus it is thematically apropos for this week’s events. It is great for adults and kids alike. And after the show, we serve pie. What could be more comforting this weekend than art and pie and humanity?

Just email us for your FREE tickets for this weekend and we’ll accommodate as many as we can, first come first served. theatre@24thstreet.org Just tell us (1) how many tix you need, and (2) for which performance; Sat 3pm, Sat 7:30pm, Sun 3pm. Donations are always welcome, but the tickets for this weekend are FREE.

El día después del 11 de septiembre, cuando todo estaba cerrado todavía, 24th STreet decidió que teníamos la responsabilidad de abrir nuestras puertas para ofrecer el mayor confort posible. Esa noche tuvimos un teatro lleno al máximo de ciudadanos aterrorizados que, al ver el programa, se dieron cuenta colectivamente de que la vida tal como la conocíamos continuaría... que no todo cambiaría como resulto de los eventos de 11/9. Para esas 100 personas, fue un gran abrazo que significó mucho. Más temprano ese día nos habíamos preguntado si estábamos haciendo lo correcto porque incluso los aeropuertos estaban cerrados, pero luego viendo el consuelo que la gente tomó del contacto humano esa noche, estaba claro que habíamos hecho lo que se necesitaba al abrir nuestro teatro GRATIS para el público después del evento más traumático de la historia.
Es precisamente en épocas como estas cuando el arte importa más. El arte verdaderamente hace que las personas se unan. Y esta semana, ciertamente necesitamos ser reunidos. Así que en el 24th STreet Theatre hemos decidido abrir nuestras casas este fin de semana una vez más GRATIS para todos. Nuestro nuevo espectáculo, Hansel & Gretel Bluegrass, por Bryan Davidson, es sobre la resiliencia y el valor de la familia, por lo que es temáticamente a propósito de los eventos de esta semana. Es ideal para adultos y niños por igual. Y después del show, servimos pastel. ¿Qué podría ser más reconfortante este fin de semana que el arte y el pastel y la humanidad?
