24th STreet Theatre stands in solidarity with our community in demanding change and justice in the wake of the senseless killing of George Floyd and countless other black Americans at the hands of police. We know that Black Lives Matter and we are taking our cue from this historic moment to look within our own organization to see how we can make our own practices more equitable.
Justice For All is one of 24th STreet Theatre’s core values and we have worked tirelessly to address it on our stage, in our work with community members, and in our educational programs. We opened our theatre in 1997 as LA was still rebuilding from the civil unrest of 1992 with the concept that we could be another bright spot in South Los Angeles by serving underserved populations and treating everyone who walked through our open doors as if they were family. And part of that work has been standing up for human rights across the board, and using our voice to speak on those issues. This is the work we’ve been engaged in for over 20 years.
What is new for us this time is that we are including ourselves as part of the audience. This time we are doing the self-reflection rather than merely asking others to. We recognize the present opportunity to help create systemic cultural change and like every other theatre we are aware of, we believe it is our job as theatre artists and as human beings to help end racism. Our staff and board are discussing ways to improve our internal practices and our Board will continue our work in building a culture of equity and inclusion as a focal point in our new strategic plan. We are also taking a course designed to help Non-Profits disrupt systemic racism and implicit bias within organizations. We are listening and watching and thinking of what we can do to be better allies, and we will continue to work to make it a more just world for everyone.
El Teatro 24 (24th STreet Theatre) se solidariza con nuestra comunidad al exigir cambios y justicia a raíz del asesinato sin sentido de George Floyd y de innumerables ciudadanos estadounidenses de raza negra a manos de la policía. Sabemos que “La Vida de Personas de Raza Negra Importa” (Black Lives Matter) y estamos siguiendo el ejemplo de este momento histórico para ver hacia adentro de nuestra propia organización y ver cómo podemos hacer para que nuestras prácticas sean más equitativas.
“Justicia Para Todos” (Justice For All) es uno de los valores fundamentales del Teatro 24 y hemos trabajado incansablemente para abordarlo en nuestro escenario, en nuestro trabajo con los miembros de la comunidad y en nuestros programas educativos. Abrimos nuestro teatro en 1997, cuando Los Ángeles todavía se estaba reconstruyendo después de los disturbios civiles de 1992 con el concepto de que podríamos ser otro punto importante en el sur de Los Ángeles sirviendo a las poblaciones desatendidas y tratando a todos los que han cruzado nuestras puertas como si fueran una familia. Y parte de ese trabajo ha sido defender los derechos humanos en todos los ámbitos y utilizar nuestra voz para hablar sobre esos temas. Este es el trabajo en el que hemos estado involucrados por más de 20 años.
En esta ocasión, lo nuevo para nosotros es que nos estamos incluyendo como parte de la audiencia. Esta vez estamos haciendo una autorreflexión en lugar de simplemente pedirle a otros que lo hagan. Hemos tomado esta oportunidad para ayudar a crear un cambio cultural sistémico y como todos los demás teatros que conocemos, creemos que es nuestro trabajo como artistas de teatro y seres humanos, ayudar a acabar con el racismo. Nuestro personal y la junta directiva están discutiendo formas para mejorar nuestras prácticas internas y nuestra junta directiva continuará nuestro trabajo en la construcción de una cultura de equidad e inclusión como punto de enfoque en nuestro nuevo plan estratégico. También estamos tomando un curso diseñado para ayudar a las instituciones sin fines de lucro a acabar con el racismo sistémico y el sesgo implícito dentro de las organizaciones. Estamos escuchando, observando y pensando en lo que podemos hacer para ser mejores aliados, y continuar trabajando para que crear un mundo más justo para todos y todas.
