First Love / El Primer Amor
“We only have one chance to make 'em fall in love.” No that’s not from a dating website commercial, that’s our artistic director’s unique approach to arts education. What does love have to do with theatre, you ask? Well, everything, actually. When kids come to 24th STreet Theatre to see our Enter Stage Right field trip, we assume that they’ve never really had the experience of being swept off their feet by live theatre. That’s a pretty safe assumption since most adults in the U.S. have never been wowed by it either. But if you ask any person working in theatre, they’ll tell you about the moment that they fell in love with the art form. And yes, theatre people use that word: LOVE. Theatre is hard work. It’s intellectual and visceral at the same time. It’s not mainstream. It doesn’t pay well. So the only reason to dedicate your life to it is because you love it.
So imagine the responsibility we feel when a busload of 3rd graders pulls up to our big green carriage doors ready for all the possibilities and magic that theatre holds. “This is our one chance to hook ‘em,” says artistic director Debbie Devine. “Our job is not merely to introduce them to the art form or to teach them vocabulary. Our job is to make them feel the magic. We have to make them feel.” So our approach is to pull back the curtain for kids and welcome them into the club of live theatre. This year we’ll be welcoming 5,000 kids into the club to experience the magic of live theatre, the magic of possibility. “The day they come to 24th STreet is the day kids fall in love with the art form of live theatre,” says Devine. “It’s a huge responsibility, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.” See a 1-min video of ESR here. El Primer Amor
"Sólo tenemos una oportunidad para enamorarlos." No, esto no es de un comercial de un sitio web de citas de amor, esta es la muy particular forma de acercarse a la educación a las artes de nuestra directora artística. ¿Usted se preguntará, ¿Qué tiene que ver el amor con el teatro? Bueno, en realidad, todo. Cuando los niños llegan al Teatro 24 para ver nuestra presentación de Enter Stage Right , suponemos que en realidad ellos nunca han tenido la experiencia de quedarse sin aliento al presenciar teatro en vivo. Eso es una suposición bastante acertada ya que la mayoría de los adultos en los EE.UU. nunca han sido cautivados por ella tampoco. Pero si le preguntas a cualquier persona que trabaja en el teatro, les hablará acerca del momento en que se enamoró de este arte. Y es así como la gente de teatro utiliza la palabra AMOR. El teatro es un trabajo duro, intelectual y visceral al mismo tiempo, no está en los grandes aparadores y no paga bien; así que la única razón para dedicar tú vida a él es por AMOR.
Así que imagínate la responsabilidad que sentimos cuando un autobús lleno de estudiantes de 3er grado se detiene en nuestras grandes puertas verdes, listos para experimentar todas las posibilidades y la magia que el teatro posee. "Esta es nuestra única oportunidad de engancharlos", dice nuestra directora artística Debbie Devine. "Nuestro trabajo no es sólo darles a conocer este arte o enseñarles su vocabulario; nuestro trabajo es hacer que sientan la magia, es HACERLOS SENTIR". Así que nuestra tarea consiste en abrirle el telón a los niños y darles la bienvenida al club del teatro en vivo. Este año vamos a estar dando la bienvenida a 5000 niños en el club para que experimenten la magia del teatro en vivo, la magia de las posibilidades.
